Nashik city police on Saturday arrested a brother of the Nashik mayor in a double murder case that had taken place on May 7.
Rajendra Wagh, the older brother of MNS mayor Yatin Wagh, was arrested in connection with murders of Mohan Changle and Deepak Sonawane. The two deceased persons had been attacked following a land dispute, according to the police.
MNS chief Raj Thackeray had made a low profile visit to the city on Friday morning.
According to unconfirmed sources, Thackeray was there because of the double murders and the alleged involvement of the mayor’s brother. Rajendra Wagh was being interrogated by the police from May 8. Though Thackeray was rumoured to be there to find the mayor’s successor his office said he was there to consult with architects and designers from Mumbai about his pet project- Goda park.
The victims were attacked when they were having dinner at a hotel on the busy Gangapur road in Nashik. The two were admitted to a private hospital but succumbed to their injuries. Changle was the founder of the Om Bajarang group and the attackers were said to be members of the same group but they had parted ways later. Municipal contracts and other property related issues were said to be the main motive of the murders, according to the police.
Vyankatesh More, Girish Appu Shetty, Arjun Pagare and Rakesh Koshti were named as accused in the case along with Rajendra Wagh, who was interrogated by the police for three days. More was arrested on Friday night. Police are still looking for the absconding accused Shetty, Pagare and Koshti.
